3 Day/2 Night All-Wreck Rec/Tec Trip
A most wonderful way to visit our northern neighbors and enjoy some amazing diving at the same time! This hybrid version of our regular visit to America’s northern version of the ‘Graveyard of the Seaway’, the St. Lawrence Seaway to be exact. Forming the border between the U.S. and our friends in the Great White North, this river has been flowing, and capturing ships, since man started canoeing on it hundreds of years ago. This trip is an IVS-exclusive, with two full days of diving, including boat dives on Saturday and Sunday on our choice of wrecks, plus leisurely shore diving on both days as well. This trip is specifically designed to meet the needs of both recreational and technical divers at the same time, and is absolutely perfect for the completion or fine-tuning of skills in the calm, controlled waters of the shoreline before we head off to enjoy the boat diving aspect. We have our choice of wrecks, and depending on who signs up, this trop can lean towards technical or recreational diving, or both! We have plenty of wrecks to choose from, some generally beyond the limits of recreational scuba diving and others clearly within our recreational standards and comfort zones. The good news is that the wrecks are in pristine shape, the water tends to run clear, and the temperature invites you to maximize your bottom time. No one loves to dive like IVS, and there’s no diving that compares for convenience and comfort like the St. Lawrence Seaway in the summer!
Our accommodations are at one of the local privately-owned and operated hotels that line the shores of the Seaway. Rooms are double occupancy and located within walking distance of downtown.
The St. Lawrence Seaway offers a very unique diving experience, with the plethora of shipwrecks to choose from, the ease of entry and exit from our drop-bow boat, brisk currents, mild temperatures, and best of all, the condition of the wrecks. Due to a lack of wood-boring worms, the older wrecks sit as they sunk – pretty darn awesome. IVS’s trip leader will brief our divers on each wreck site, and for this trip, our site selection will generally include the Keystorm (depths of 20 to 120 ft), the America (60 to 80 ft) , perhaps the Maggie L (in the 60 ft depth range), the Vickery (depths of 70 to 165 ft) al perfect for recreational diving, or as warm-ups for technical diving. If the participants are properly certified and capable, we may include Jodrey (max depth 240 ft) as our featured site. We plan to conduct shore dives to start, followed by a boat dive on Saturday afternoon. Sunday will also include boat diving, and the option to shore dives to perfect skills as well. Again, depending on who signs up for this particular event, we can possibly do boat diving all day on Sunday, at a slight additional cost, and based on the availability of our charter operator as well. The second Sunday charter boat dives are not included in the trip price, and additional fees will apply.
And while we enjoy our rides on the river, the scenery is utterly amazing, with thousands of small islands dotting the waterway, all sorts of cool architectural takes on housing to enjoy, lots of photo opportunities above and below the water, and we often will stop at a waterside restaurant for lunch to add to the uniqueness of this trip.
